As a family photographer in South Dakota, one of the most common concerns I hear from parents is, “What if my kids don’t cooperate during the session?” The good news? With a little preparation and the right mindset, your children can (and will!) shine in front of the camera. Here are my top tips for making your family photography session a fun and stress-free experience for everyone.
1. Talk About It Ahead of Time
Children thrive when they know what to expect. Let them know you’ll be meeting a photographer (you can even show them a picture of me beforehand!) and that you’ll be playing games and spending time together. Present the session as something fun rather than something they have to do.
2. Schedule Around Their Best Time of Day
If possible, plan your session during a time when your kids are well-rested and fed. For many families, this means avoiding nap times or late evenings. When children feel their best, they’re more likely to be cooperative and happy.
3. Bring a Few Comfort Items
Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal, small toy, or blanket? Bringing familiar items can help them feel safe and at ease. (Bonus: these comfort items can also make for adorable candid shots!)
4. Dress Them in Comfortable Clothing
Kids look and feel better when they can move around freely. Choose outfits that are soft, not itchy, and not overly complicated. Neutral, coordinating colors (rather than matching outfits) photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family’s connection.
5. Keep Expectations Realistic
No family session is perfect, and that’s the beauty of it! Kids will be kids, and that’s exactly what I want to capture. Instead of aiming for perfect smiles, focus on genuine interactions. Cuddles, laughter, and even a few silly moments make for the best images.
6. Offer Gentle Encouragement (and Maybe a Little Bribery!)
Simple rewards like a trip to get ice cream after the session or extra playtime can go a long way. Avoid putting too much pressure on your kids during the shoot; instead, let me guide them through fun prompts and games that naturally bring out their personalities.
7. Trust Your Photographer
As a photographer, I’m experienced in working with children of all ages and temperaments. I know how to pivot when needed and keep the session moving smoothly. The best thing you can do is relax and enjoy the experience with your kids, your calm energy will help them feel the same.
Final Thoughts
Preparing your kids for a family photography session is all about setting the right expectations and keeping things lighthearted. When children feel comfortable and parents feel relaxed, that’s when the magic happens.
